Ready to set sail! Johnny Depp gets into character as Captain Jack Sparrow as he boards a makeshift ship to film scenes for Pirates Of The Caribbean in Australia

It's not every day you see Captain Jack Sparrow and his clique of pirates in the flesh, ready to set sail.

But that's just what happened bright and early on Friday morning as actors and crew filmed new scenes for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales on Queensland's Gold Coast.

The 52-year-old was spotted in full costume, including his signature maroon headband, wig, shabby brown coat and extravagantly plaited beard.

Depp was seen taking some advice from directors during the fifth installment of the $300 million Disney hit, while film crews tethered to the vessel.

At least a half dozen other actors dressed in dark, weather-worn jackets and pirate hats were huddled in close around him.

Kevin McNally, who plays Joshamee Gibbs, Jack Sparrows' most loyal crew member, was also spotted in the scene standing just behind his boss.

Meanwhile, Skins actress Kaya Scodelario was also in character on the day but was spotted just out of shot.

The filming should be a welcome distraction for Depp who caused controversy recently when he and his much younger wife Amber Heard, 29, smuggled their dogs into Australia.

The handsome pair failed to declare the fur balls when they landed on a private jet in Brisbane in April.
