British shoppers are being fooled over where their cheese is made, warns Dairy Crest boss

Britain’s leading milk and cheese producer Dairy Crest is demanding clearer labelling for supermarket cheese amid fears that shoppers are being misled about its origins.

The group’s chief executive, Mark Allen, is pushing for straightforward labelling of where cheese is made to replace current rules.

At present, shoppers do not have to be informed in the case of cheese which is sliced and packaged.

He said: ‘We are lobbying our Government and the European Commission for it to be compulsory to clearly state where milk and cheese is from.

‘We import 90,000 tonnes of Cheddar per year, but if a cheese is packaged in the UK you can’t determine where it was made.’

The British Cheese Board has also been lobbying the Government for clearer indications of where cheese was made.

The EU only requires that the packaging shows where the last significant stage of processing took place, meaning imported Cheddar can be cut into smaller pieces in the UK, packaged, and given a UK health mark.

Allen added: ‘The label wouldn’t say that particular cheese has come from elsewhere in Europe, in South America, North America, in Australia, New Zealand or anywhere else.

‘People should know where their food is from.

‘I get enough letters to know that consumers do want to support British farmers and they should be able to make a conscious choice by their purchasing.’

Born in Axbridge, schooled in Cheddar, we realised centuries ago that Cheddar cheese is just a recipe made from cows milk that's available the world over. But you should try the cave aged Cheddar from wookey hole, it's gurt lovely.

The price of cheese doesn't seem to reflect its origin as a cheap import

Is this article about CHEESE or how to earn some extra on your webcam with a feather duster? Going back to cheese and having lost the thread completely unsurprisingly ....I'd say support British producers eg the Truckle Co Cheese Co.
