Twice as many drivers think there are more temptations to drink-drive in the summer than the winter, a survey has revealed.

And younger drivers, aged 18 to 24, are more likely than older ones to be lured into having summer drinks before getting behind the wheel, according to the poll.

Regionally, drivers in north-west England were most tempted to drink and drive in the summer, while those in Scotland and Northern Ireland were least likely to do so.

If faced with designated drivers who had had too many, over two thirds of people surveyed said would confiscate their keys and call a cab.

This was most likely among those in Northern Ireland, where 80 per cent would step in, according to the AA/Populus survey.

Those in south-west England were the most likely to find another way home and report their friend to the police, but nationally only 6 per cent of 23,450 drivers surveyed said they would take this action.

Three quarters of women surveyed said they would take away keys from a driver over the limit, compared to just over two thirds of men.

Danger: Younger drivers and those living in the north west were most likely to drink drive

AA president Edmund King said: 'We must continue to remind drivers about the dangers of drinking and driving. It is crucial that drivers and their friends and family consider the hazards of drinking and driving on all occasions throughout the summer.

'Twice as many people agree that there are more temptations to drink-drive in the summer than in the winter but it is worrying that a significant number of people would still accept a lift with a drink-driver. This is dicing with death as drinking and driving should never be mixed.'

I'm an older driver and I would never dream of drinking alcohol, when driving. It's not mu scene.

The simple message here should be no alcohol if your driving. Booze affects people in different way's and these days with measures constantly changing people get confused about strength of beer, size of wine, how long it takes the body to get rid of one unit of alcohol. Keep it simple - no booze if your driving.

No surprise then that twice as many people are prosecuted for drink driving during the summer months than at Christmas

What `Brain of Britain` came to this conclusion??

If they made the limits a bit more sensible it wouldn't be a problem. I really don't think habving half a bbottle of wine with dinner and driving home is an issue, except for the law.

There is nothing better than enjoying a pint of real ale in the beer garden of a thatched pub on a hot summer's evening. It's one of the very British things we all love.So I have a simple message for our not so loved police...GET STUFFED ! (Or come and join us you might actually enjoy it ! )

Is that why young drivers crash their cars in the eatly hours? But, why the emphasis on drink drivers when using a telephone when driving is just as dangerous yet seems to get a smaller fine and lower points? Put the fine up to £500 for a first offence and £750 thereafter and see how the offences drop. Htiing the pocket is anways the answer.

If the law was changed so drivers should not drink at all when driving people would know straight away they were commiting an offence.rather than think they were under the limit. If then when caught over the limit there would be no excuse. Then they could be fined say, £5000.and five year ban. That would be a strong detterent. As it is a at the moment drunk drivers create revenue in two directions ,tax to the government through booze and fines for drinking and driving.Oh and killing innocent people they then get a paltry prison term. It is not good enough.
