Miley Cyrus has explained her eyebrow-raising appearance at the European Music Awards, which included lighting up what appeared to be a joint as she accepted her Best Video award.

On the show on Wednesday she said: 'I just did it mostly 'cause I knew the fans in Amsterdam would love it. And I knew that the whole place would go super wild.

And in reaction to the media storm her actions on Sunday created she told hosts Lisa Snowdon and Dave Berry on Capital FM's Breakfast show: 'Some people just over think so much'. '

On where the idea came from she continued: 'It's just not something I think about. I was just was walking out of my room and then I was like 'oh I have this in my bag. That will be really funny.

'I didn’t say anything to anybody. And I don’t tell anyone I'm going to do it. Some people just over think so much.

And the diva who's been hell-bent on shocking her fans since she twerked on the VMAs in August said she doesn't care about the global media storm she sparked.

She said: 'I don’t really care what the media says. I don’t google myself so I don’t know what they say…I'm just too bloody honest!

The former Disney star also commented on the way that Europeans reacted to her controversial performance compared to America after her appearance was cut by MTV for US audiences.

Her reaction on twitter was to blow it all off. 'Sometimes in life you just gotta decide to not give a f***,' the former Hannah Montana actress tweeted on Monday. 'Last night was a blurrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.'

Speaking to Dave and Lisa Miley said: 'I think after you do something like THAT and then everyone kind of doesn’t want to talk as much about your performances but this is one of my favorite parts about coming to Europe.

'Even though that happened, its not the main focus of the night. Everyone was liking my performance and how I sounded…which is so different than when you do something in the states.

'When I did the VMAs, everything just became about teddy bears, or about what I was wearing…people over here really listen and take in all of it, its not just about that.'

Miley is due to perform on X Factor on Sunday says she has some more surprises in store for her fans and the shows viewers alike.

She said: 'I'm doing something a little different, I've got something amazing built for this performance that’s all I'm gonna say.

Its really beautiful…That place is so big and intimidating. Its so awkward singing in front of a judge panel even though you’re not being judged.'

Earlier this week Miley also gave a shout out on Twitter to a pal. 'Thanks @katyperry for hosting. So much fun last night! Amsterdam, you're the dopesssst, thank you for always being so good to me.'

Miley's antics can be seen on YouTube however, which offers a 35-second clip of the Wrecking Ball singer lighting up then squatting down for no apparent reason.

Marijuana is not legal in the Netherlands, but smokers can't be prosecuted for possessing small amounts and it's sold openly in cafes known euphemistically as 'coffee shops'.

Miley's decision to light up on stage did little to impress many of her fans, with people taking to Twitter to comment on the act.

One wrote: 'Seriously wtf is wrong with miley cyrus?! Why would you smoke a joint at the ema awards?!'

Splitting opinion: Miley's act didn't go down too well on Twitter, with the majority of people lambasting her for the decision to light up on stage

While another added: 'Haha Miley Cyrus is now smoking weed on live TV. What next?'

Even This Morning host Eamonn Holmes put in his two cents, writing on Twitter: 'Miley Cyrus raises eyebrows again . At MTV awards she appears to smoke a joint. Tries a bit too hard to be controversial …'

It wasn't only Miley's cigarette choice that caused controversy at the awards, however.

Arriving at the red carpet bash, Miley shunned a fancy gown in favour of a backless halter top with drawstring detail at the front and sides, with very little protecting her modesty as the audience looked on.

The star's top was emblazoned with the images of rappers Tupac and Biggie Smalls, with the word 'VIOLENCE' running along its hem and the rather telling comment, 'Please Stop' adorning her rear.

Miley opened the ceremony with a space-themed performance of her smash hit, We Can't Stop, while dressed as an astronaut in a skintight silver spacesuit.

The former child star poked her tongue out as she danced alongside a latex-clad female little person, before groping her dancer's breasts and rubbing her face into her chest.

Miley later changed into a revealing white bodysuit for a more stripped-back performance of her hit track Wrecking Ball.

In December Miley will make several Jingle Ball appearances and in February she begins touring the US.
