Fonda, who's currently starring with Lily Tomlin in the Netflix comedy Grace And Frankie spoke with local news media before the rally where she was due to give a speech.

She joked: 'I have a hit TV show now. If I get arrested it'll bring even more attention to the issue.'

She added: 'I hope I get arrested.'

The China Syndrome star said she wanted to be 'on the right side of history' for the sake of her children and grandchildren.

"Committing the rest of my life is no big deal, I don't have that much left," she quipped.

"But my grandchildren have a lot left and I want them to be able to feel proud of me, to feel that ... I did every single possible thing I could do to make their world a livable world."

The Oscar winner said she stands with local First Nations, the Aborigine peoples of Canada, in t heir opposition to a proposed pipeline expansion from Edmonton, Alberta, to the Pacific coast in British Columbia.

The project would ship oil across mountain ranges and bring more tankers into the coastal area around Vancouver.

McAdams, like Fonda, is also opposed to plans by Shell to begin drilling next month in the Arctic Sea.

The oil company wants to target areas that have recently become ice free as a result of climate change.

McAdams donned a t-shirt with an image of a fish drawn in the style of the local indigenous peoples of British Columbia and had the slogan: 'Toast The Coast Before The Coast Is Toast.'

The actress who flew from LA for the rally spent time chatting with others who attended the event and happily posing for photographs.
