Olivia Palermo wears a plunging semi-sheer kimono to Tokyo's ELLE Women in Society event

Olivia Palermo was on top of her fashion game on Saturday when she appeared at a society event in Tokyo, Japan.

The 29-year-old model and socialite kept things bright and colourful with an unusually patterned and shaped dress.

She even wore playful shoes that featured multi-coloured tassels on them.

Striking in stripes like Olivia in Preen

The summer wouldn't be complete without stripes. Something about the nautical-inspired pattern makes us dream of sand, sun and the French Riviera. After all, the classic Breton striped shirt (think Coco Chanel and Pablo Picasso) was born in France as the uniform of the country's sailors.

Thousands of miles away, Olivia Palermo was spotted at an Elle Women in Society even in Tokyo today wearing one of the prettiest striped dresses of the season. Preen by Thornton Bregazzi's "Flintoff" red-and-blue-and-white striped dress is selling out quickly on the web. But click right and you can nab one now at Net-A-Porter for half off the original price of $2,130.

If spending more than $1,000 still isn't rocking your boat, check out our finds below, starting at $18! We particularly love Samantha Sung's knee-length frock at Yoox.

While clearly dressed to the nines for the ELLE Women in Society party, Olivia went for a somewhat relaxed look, her caramel-coloured hair flowing loosely in waves over the shoulders.

Careful eye makeup and lipstick in a subtle shade of red followed the same air of simplicity.

For her dress, the former The City star wore a blue and red wrap dress with white stripes and a complicated shape.

Falling to a low-cut V-neck at the top, Olivia's dress hung in an asymmetrical skirt that reached almost to her ankles.

Olivia's shoes were possibly the most notable item worn by the socialite on Saturday - white, high-heeled sandals featuring a red pattern and red, yellow, and blue tassels.

Bright red nails, a bracelet, and a watch finished off the outfit, while the wife of model Johannes Huebl, 37, carried only a small, multi-coloured handbag.

Already a prominent socialite in New York City, Olivia gained wider recognition as one of the stars of The City starting in late 2008.

She parlayed that fame and her keen fashion sense into a style website, OliviaPalermo.com, and an ongoing modelling career.

Shortly after her June 2014 wedding to Johannes, Olivia described how her style and fashion came from a lifelong devotion to being put-together.

'My mother always taught me that you don't leave the house until you're fully dressed - make-up and everything,' she told Marie Claire.**

'Even when I was young I enjoyed fashion - I didn't have a grunge phase or anything like that,' Olivia added.
