It's called a 'ring finger' for a reason! Sweden's Prince Carl Philip fails to perform at the crucial moment... but soon enjoys his first kiss as a married man

  • Sweden's Prince Carl Philip is marrying Sofia Hellqvist, 30, at a ceremony in the chapel at Stockholm's Royal Palace
  • He is the third in line to the throne behind his elder sister Princess Victoria and her daughter, Princess Estelle, three
  • Princess Sofia is a former glamour model, who once posed topless while clutching a snake to preserve her modesty

These are the charming scenes where Prince Carl Philip struggled to put the wedding ring on his former glamour model wife Sofia Hellqvist during an extravagant ceremony in the chapel at Stockholm's Royal Palace.

Clasping his bride's hand, the prince fumbled the ring, initially trying to place the band on the wrong finger.

The new princess smiled as her husband attempted to ease the ring onto her finger, although with the formalities complete, the prince had no problems in securing his first kiss as a married man.

Princess Sofia, a former reality TV star and yoga instructor, beamed as the couple rode past the thousands of well-wishers who lined the streets of Stockholm for the occasion - despite suggestions of dwindling support for the Swedish royal family.

The 30-year-old, who was today given the official title of Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Värmland, looked breathtaking in an elegant bridal gown, completed with a delicate diamond and emerald crown.

Get hitched in a princess- style wedding gown

Sophia Hellqvist, actually sorry, pardon us-- we mean, Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Varmland, took a cue from Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge with her stunning wedding gown custom designed by Swedish designer, Ida Sjostedt.

The dress bore a remarkable resemblance to Kate's now iconic gown with it's long laced sleeves and sweetheart bodice. Sofia chose a wide sweeping neckline that graced her elegant chest and shoulders.

The dress fell softly in an undramatic, elegant A-line silhouette but featured a breathtaking train. We love the delicate lace, we love Sofia's demure hair coif, but most of all we love the subtly of this ball gown style dress.

It's not too overdone and not too puffy but it's such a refreshing departure from the ever-so popular mermaid style dresses.

This former naughty girl looks every bit reformed and dewy faced in this sweet bridal gown. The way every woman should look on her wedding day.

Sofia's dress was made to measure so unfortunately the same one cannot be purchased, but every bride should feel like a princess on their wedding day so we've pulled together a few similar options below.

The prince, 36, is the third in line to the Swedish throne behind his elder sister Crown Princess Victoria and her three-year-old daughter, Princess Estelle. They were among the dozens of guests who attended the ceremony, along with Prince Philip's parents, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

Other guests included Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex, Queen Sonja of Norway, her son Crown Prince Haakon and his wife Princess Mette-Marit, and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.

Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie also attended the ceremony.

But while many of the royals looked stunning in their jewel-coloured gowns, all eyes were on Princess Sofia.

Created by Swedish designer Ida Sjöstedt, her wedding gown featured intricate couture lace and was made in three shades of white. Her beautiful train, which was hand-cut and hand stitched, was carried behind her as she and her husband stepped out of the chapel.

The elegant bridal look was completed with an embroidered veil and delicate tiara adorned with diamonds and emeralds.

The pair reportedly first met at a Stockholm nightclub in 2010, with news of their relationship being revealed soon after.

The prince's new girlfriend was known for appearing in the popular Swedish reality show Paradise Hotel in 2005, which saw young, scantily-clad singles compete to stay the longest in a luxury hotel. During her stint on the show, she kissed famous American porn star Jenna Jameson.

During a period studying in the US, she landed a job as a glamour model for Slitz magazine.

Her first shoot came at the age of 20 and saw her posing topless in a pair of camouflage print bikini bottoms and clutching a snake to preserve her modesty. So popular was her shoot, she was crowned 'Miss Slitz 2004'.

So when news of Carl Philip's new relationship emerged in 2010, the Swedish Royal Family were initially put 'on the defensive', as sources put it at the time.

Queen Silvia in particular is said to have considered Miss Hellqvist an unsuitable match for her son, who was newly single following a split from his girlfriend of almost a decade, PR girl Emma Pernald.

Speaking about her past, Miss Hellqvist said: 'It's a shame there's still so much written about that. It was 10 years ago, I've gotten on with my life since then.

'I don't regret anything. All these experiences have made me the person I am. I wouldn't have made those choices today.'

Ms Hellqvist, who is from the central Swedish town of Alvdalen, also studied accounting in New York in 2005 and worked there as a yoga teacher and a waitress.

Amid rumours that her past had caused disquiet among the royal family, the palace has emphasised her charity work.

In 2010 she co-founded the Project Playground charity which helps disadvantaged children in South Africa. She has also worked as a volunteer in several African countries.

Her new husband has earned something of a playboy reputation himself, thanks to his love of fast cars and glamorous parties.

Two years after meeting Miss Hellqvist came the infamous 'Wild Summer' of 2012 - a variety of colourful incidents still referenced by Sweden's press which documented his antics.

Among them was a drunken rampage in central Stockholm while wearing an alien mask.

On Friday evening, more than 200 wedding guests attended a dinner in honour of the couple on the island of Skeppsholmen.

Carl Philip's elder sister, Crown Princess Victoria - the next in line to the throne - married her personal trainer, Daniel Wesling, in Stockholm in 2010. Their father, Carl XVI Gustav, is 69 and has ruled Sweden for 41 years.
