HEALTH NOTES: Hoff's beach ready, but don't ask him to run...

He made his name running across Californian beaches in a tiny pair of red trunks in 1990s TV series Baywatch – but actor David Hasselhoff now has to find more gentle ways to keep fit, thanks to arthritic knees.

The former Britain’s Got Talent judge, who is set to reboot his career with an improvised comedy sketch show called Hoff The Record, explained: ‘I can’t run any more – my knees are shot. It’s age and arthritis more than anything.’

Hasselhoff, 62, who shot to fame in the 1980s as crimefighter Michael Knight in the Knight Rider series, added: ‘I try to train like I’m 40 – I try to get my heart rate up to 140bpm when I’m doing cardio. Biking is really good and I go hiking as well.

‘I find my face looks better, my body looks better and it keeps off the love handles. When I’m travelling I take rubber training bands with me.

‘You put them round your feet and you can exercise your chest and back just using resistance.

‘It’s a lot easier to stay in shape than it is to get in shape. My advice is to get in shape once and stay there because once you’re out of shape, it takes for ever to get it back.’

Hay fever season not only spells misery for sufferers – it can hit employers in the pocket too. A survey of 1,000 UK adults with pollen allergies revealed that nearly a week of productivity is lost per affected employee during the summer months.

A fifth of respondents said they had been forced to leave the office early or call in sick due to symptoms such itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing. One in ten resorted to working from home to keep their hay fever under control, while a third stayed indoors during their lunch break for fear of making their symptoms worse.

Just 16 per cent thought their employer was sympathetic to their plight, according to the survey commissioned by air purifier appliances firm Appliances Direct.

Six million Britons may be suffering in silence with debilitating back pain because they do not have a diagnosis for their symptoms.

A poll of 3,300 people by Nuffield Health revealed that 1,200 suffered from lower back pain that impacted on daily life. Of those, a quarter said they did not have a diagnosis, and didn’t understand why they had pain or how it could be treated. Back pain is the UK’s leading cause of long-term sickness, responsible for more than 15 million days off work in 2013.

The research also shows patients who do receive a diagnosis are twice as likely to be guided towards painkillers rather than exercise to manage their pain – even though exercise is a recognised treatment for lower back pain.

Mr Christopher Dare, consultant spinal surgeon at Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital, says: ‘Delaying a diagnosis can have a harmful impact long-term on careers, families and psychological welfare. Wherever possible people need to keep moving and exercising, while early physiotherapy and scanning can help prevent people spending years in pain.’

Love those ear lobes...

Big may be beautiful as far as earrings are concerned this season, but dangly jewellery could be damaging your skin.

Like necks and hands, ear lobes sag and wrinkle as the skin’s collagen and elasticity decrease with age.

Women who repeatedly wear heavy earrings are particularly at risk of damage as the weight stretches the skin to the point at which the pierced hole can elongate into a vertical opening, and even tear in extreme cases.

Help is now at hand with the Swan Lobe, a support that lifts lobes when wearing earrings to prevent the skin sagging or tearing.

Made from a thin transparent plastic, the Swan Lobe is peeled off a backing sheet and applied behind the ear, above. The earring is then inserted into the existing piercing and through the Swan Lobe, which transfers the weight from the lobe to the stronger cartilage higher up the ear.
