In the first of a two-week serialisation, exclusive to The Mail on Sunday, the book claims the run on Northern Rock - which saw Britain shamed as pictures of desperate bank customers queuing up to withdraw their cash were beamed around the world - could have been avoided through a rescue takeover by Lloyds.

MIDAS SHARE TIPS: Kromek's ground-breakingscanners that could stop - and make - a bomb
The 'dirty bomb' threat is growing. Islamic State is collecting radioactive materials and other dangerous chemicals as it powers through the Middle East - and even Nato is worried about what the murderous regime plans to do with them. Kromek, an AIM-listed company spun out of Durham University, has devised a way to minimise the threat posed by this kind of terrorist activity. The shares are 33½p and should increase significantly over the next few years.

MONEY NEWS & ADVICE
Buying your first home? Then get on with it now as property experts forecast mortgage drought for low deposit borrowers
Some property commentators are forecasting a mortgage drought for low deposit borrowers - forcing first-timers to rent or stay with parents for longer as they try to build up a decent lump sum for when they finally buy. Here are some of the latest best-buy deals for first-time buyers - and the reasons why they may not be around for long. Nicola Ironside and Devin Gibb qualified for a 95 per cent mortgage for their flat in Forfar
LAURA HAMILTON INTERVIEW: I'm relying on properties to give me a place in the sun when I retire
Laura Hamilton is best known for her role as presenter of Channel 4's overseas property series A Place In The Sun. In 2011, she was a runner-up on Dancing On Ice and this year she has joined the presenting team of Cowboy Builders on Channel 5. Now 33, she lives in Purley, Surrey, and is married to Alex, 34, an insurance broker. The couple have a son Rocco, one, and a baby girl, Tahlia. Here she explains how she buys, renovates and sell properties.
JEFF PRESTRIDGE: You must NEVER stop jumping up and down to make these pension changes work, Ros
Last week Ros Altmann, the new Pensions Minister, said the pension reforms should be given time to bed in before providers were held to account for dragging their feet. Understandable political waffle. But disappointing really because I know for sure that the old Altmann would now be jumping up and down, spitting feathers and demanding immediate Government intervention.
SIMON WATKINS: Boeing's aggressive marketing sparks debate - should we defend the realm - or jobs?
It is a debate that comes around regularly in Whitehall and we can see it again in the case of Apache helicopters that American group Boeing is aggressively marketing to the Ministry of Defence - offering a massive discount in a bid to win the order. The military top brass believe the Apache is the right product operationally, though rival manufacturers, would obviously argue otherwise.
BROOKS MACDONALD DEFENSIVE CAPITAL: We're pension-friendly for the new landscape, says fund boss
Freedoms introduced in April to give pension savers more choice over where they put their money at retirement have resulted in several asset managers claiming they now offer investment funds perfect for the new landscape. And wealth manager Brooks Macdonald is keen to emphasise the pension friendliness of its Defensive Capital Fund, which aims to increase clients' capital by investing in a mix of bonds and low-risk assets.
'I knew we'd get flak for the Election polling - but for us that's just a cottage industry': Ipsos Mori boss is losing no sleep over disastrous polls
Ben Page was on air on the BBC on the night and says he knew immediately his business would be in for flak. 'I could immediately see there was going to be a lot of fuss and bother,' he says. But despite some anger and calls for regulation of pollsters from Labour peers, Page says the market research business he runs is unlikely to be hit hard.
SMALL BUSINESS: NEWS, TIPS AND SUCCESS STORIES
This year's £1.3bn of funding to set digital firms on a hiring spree as tech start-ups see 'terrific' growth
Investment in young technology companies is set to create 20,000 jobs in the UK this year, according to research by Future Fifty, a programme to help 50 of Britain's leading digital companies grow much bigger, and job search engine Adzuna.
The last word in passwords: Why using a software 'safety box' can keep your online accounts secure
Passwords are one of the curses of the 21st Century - but if you are struggling to remember a growing list of secret codes a 'password manager' may help. Research by credit checking agency Experian indicates that people have on average 26 online accounts - embracing everything from banking and social media to online stores and utility bills. Emma Wills changed passwords after her email was hacked
Goin' loco down in Rock and Padstow: Two thirds of Britons expected to take a domestic break this year - with 'Poldark effect' set to crowd out Cornwall
Two thirds of us are expected to take at least one British break this year and Cornwall is the number one destination to visit, research has revealed. Dubbed the 'Poldark effect,' after the popular BBC television show was set in Cornwall, nearly half of those planning a British break will head to the South West.
Classic car lovers snap up everything from a Rolls Royce, to a Skoda convertible and a 1940s London bus, as entire motor museum goes under the hammer
Iconic cars on offer when the Stondon Museum collection was sold ranged from an Aston Martin Lagonda, to a Rover SD1 police car, and Ford Model T. But buyers could also pick up some even more exotic items, including a former Russian Army Soviet 4x4 Amphibious Battle Support Vehicle and a 1948 AEC Regent III RT London bus.
If food inflation is negative - why is the price of a pint of beer still going up like the clappers? ADRIAN LOWERY blames the New Beards...
It's one of the classic cases of business taking something that was enjoying a renaissance and marketing it back to us at inflated prices as a lifestyle choice. Except this time in league, ironically, with bearded hipsters on fixed-gear bicycles. In fact they are the marketing executives - as in the case of pretend punks, BrewDog.

INVESTMENT EXTRA: The funds that are invested in risky AIM shares - with varying degrees of success
The Alternative Investment Market - also known as AIM - celebrates its 20th birthday on Friday. And while the stock market for small companies has come on leaps and bounds since 1995 investing in it is still as risky as ever. AIM is home to 1,100 fledgling companies. For them, it's a great first step in to the stock market. It allows them to sell shares to raise vital funding to grow their business further. Listing on AIM, rather than on the FTSE, is also easier - there is no requirement to have been trading for three years, or to issue a minimum number of shares, and the disclosure rules are less stringent.
SMALL CAP MOVERS: Green hills spell gold for Galantas as permission given for underground mine near Omagh
Shares leapt 30 per cent higher Thursday to 7p as government officials gave the company's subsidiary, Omagh Minerals, permission to excavate gold, silver and lead for 15 years. The site had been operated as an open pit until 2013, but analysts estimate that work beneath the surface could yield as much 25 thousand ounces of gold alone each year.

When should you start drawing the state pension? How delaying for just a year could net you £10,000
People reaching official retirement age before next April get a 10.4 per cent boost to their future income for each year they put off taking the state pension. If you defer for just one year, that works out at £410 extra annually or £10,100 if you live for 24 and a half years beyond your state pension age. If you can afford to postpone for seven years, your state pension will be £1,640 higher a year or £40,300 altogether, according to a study by Fidelity Worldwide Investment.

But how much of this allowance you can claim depends on the source of your income - it's the split between your savings and non-savings income that counts.

Will Tories close the 'salary sacrifice' loophole giving popular pension perk to low and middle earners?
'Salary sacrifice' schemes are a nice little earner for many workers and their employers, but if you aren't already signed up it might soon be too late. Arrangements like this are essentially a legal way to dodge National Insurance payments. Employers allow staff to take a supposed 'pay cut', but the money gets ploughed into their pension or put towards some other benefit like childcare instead, and both sides pay less NI as a result.

Figures from the ONS showed negative inflation of 0.1 per cent in April, as the consumer prices index fell slightly year-on-year. A mild dose of deflation is not forecast to change the outlook for rates, however, with inflation expected to soon pick back up again and a late spring 2016 rise on the cards.
