Britain's biggest building society is this morning suffering from an embarrassing IT meltdown which has left millions of its customers unable to access internet banking. The glitch at Nationwide Building Society - whose tagline is 'on your side,' - has also meant online payments are down as is its mobile banking app.

Savers will be able to add an extra £10,000 to their Premium Bond investments today, as the upper limit has increased from £40,000 to £50,000. For the first time, families will also be able to buy Premium Bonds for their children directly online or by phone today. In the past, these could only be purchased by post or at a Post Office branch. The total amount invested in Premium Bonds has risen from £19.7billion in 2003 to more than £53billion.
