In 1841, when Church Apostle Elder Orson Hyde was traveling on a missionary journey to Jerusalem, he stopped in Rotterdam and Amsterdam for more than a week and explained the gospel to several rabbis. The first missionaries assigned to the country arrived in August 1861. By May 1862, they had baptized 14 people in Amsterdam and organized the first congregation of the Church there.

During the Church's first century in the country, some 4,500 missionaries served there and more than 14,000 people were baptized. Many of these converts emigrated to the United States. In recent years, however, few members have emigrated and today there are many second, third, and even fourth-generation Church members in the Netherlands.

Official recognition of the Church occurred in August 1955, after nearly 20 years of petitioning.

Today, members total slightly fewer than 7,900 in the Netherlands, organized into 38 congregations that meet in 34 meetinghouses. These meetinghouses serve as the location for Church activities of all kinds. In addition to sacrament meetings, Primary classes for children, and meetings for women and youth groups, there are sport activities, such as table tennis, basketball, and volleyball. Additionally there are cultural events, such as dancing, musical, and theatrical performances.

High ideals are taught with strong emphasis on family life, abstinence from alcohol and tobacco, and commitment to high moral principles that characterize Latter-day Saint beliefs. Converts come from a wide age range and from all socioeconomic groups.

Humanitarian services totaling millions of dollars have been given worldwide. Relief without regard to race, nationality, or religion is given. Food, clothing, medical supplies, and economic aid continue to alleviate the suffering of deprived people. European nations, and more recently, Eastern Europeans receive special assistance. In 1990, Dutch Church members organized a food drive that resulted in the shipment of 12 large truckloads of food to Romania.
