Denise Richards has responded to her ex-husband Charlie Sheen's erratic rant, in which he branded her a 'washed-up piglet shame pile'.

Appearing to take her former spouse's cutting words on the chin, the 44-year-old actress decided to take the moral high ground and simply wish the former Two And A Half Men star a 'happy Father's Day' on behalf of their two daughters, Sam, 11, and Lola, 10.

And while she went for the classy approach when it came to responding to her ex's somewhat bizarre slurs, Denise admitted her girls were 'disappointed' they couldn't spend the special day with their dad.

In a series of Twitter posts, Denise wrote: 'Happy Dad's Day! @charliesheen have a great trip in Mexico! Kids were disappointed u weren't here for it- Hey we'll celebrate when u r back!

'And Happy Fathers Day to all the dads including my own dad Irv! Best dad ever & an amazing Grandpa!'

In one final message, the model re-tweeted a post from her friend Leeza Gibbons, which read: 'Negative people have a problem for every solution. Ignore them if you can.'

Denise's response came after the 49-year-old actor took to Twitter to vent about both her and his third wife Brooke Mueller, 37, earlier in the day.

While Charlie claimed to 'adore' Brooke, he angrily called Denise a 'washed up piglet Shame pile.'

'Brooke M is a sexy rok star whom I adore,' Charlie posted on Sunday. 'D Richards is a heretic washed up piglet Shame pile.'

'Happy Father's Day!!!' he added.

The context of this incredibly bizarre message was not immediately apparent, although Charlie's relationship with the mothers of his four young children has been volatile for years.

A second message posted an hour later by Charlie indicated that he and Denise might be fighting about access to their two daughters, 11-year-old Sam and 10-year-old Lola.

'Father's Rights! I INSIST we devour the mendacity of these "kidnapping" D Richards "types" & bring justice to "us,"' Charlie tweeted without context.

Two hours after the initial tweet, Charlie made it clear in a follow-up rant - one too long for Twitter - that his beef with Denise was related to some conflict over money.

Rant: On Sunday, Charlie posted a Father's Day rant in which he slammed ex-wife Denise but praised Brooke Mueller - his third wife

Kidnapping accusation: A second tweet followed after an hour, seeming to accuse Denise of kidnapping the couple's two daughters, Sam and Lola

'Best mom ever': Back in 2013, Charlie praised Denise (above on June 14) as a great mother

Charlie referred to his ex as a 'despicable charlatan' to whom he claimed to have paid over $30 million.

'See u in court you evil terrorist sack of landfill rash,' Charlie wrote.

The anger directed toward Denise - who was married to Charlie from 2002 to 2006 - was especially odd when the Anger Management actor had seemed on good terms with his second ex-wife in recent months.

'Rok star': Brooke, Charlie's third ex-wife is the mother of his twin sons, Bob and Max, and was apparently in her ex-husband's good graces for Father's Day

'two winners, raised by two winners!! congrats S&L! Love ya D! xox c #SoProud,' Charlie wrote to Twitter on March 24, alongside a photo of his daughters on horses.

At the end of 2013, Charlie seemed to hate both of his exes: 'why duz the Hilton fam, have more love and compassion for my kids than Duh-nese and Broke (I mean Brooke)? c #B&Dsuck.'

Five months before that, however, Charlie urged his 11 million followers to watch Denise's television show, Twister, referring to the actress as an 'uber-babe' and 'best mom ever.'

Custody issues: In the past, Denise has even mothered Brooke's children when she was dealing with drug issues

Denise has indeed proved herself to be a good mother to Charlie's children, even taking custody of his twin sons, Bob and Max (now five), due to mother Brooke's drug use in May 2013.

Charlie's own sobriety and mental health have been questioned over the years, especially after he was fired from his hit comedy, Two And A Half Men, in March 2011.

The Golden Globe-winning actor embarked on an energetic press and speaking tour afterwards, frequently insisting he was 'winning' due to such oddities as 'tiger blood' and 'Adonis DNA.'

Since then, Charlie's life has mostly calmed down - he starred in 100 episodes of TNT's comedy, Anger Management until its series finale in December 2014.
