USPS Looking to Fire Gyrocopter Pilot
Updated:
RUSKIN, Fla. (AP) -- A man who flew a gyrocopter through some of America's most restricted airspace before landing at the U.S. Capitol says his employer, the United States Postal Service, is taking steps to fire him.
Doug Hughes said Wednesday the agency intends to fire him for "unacceptable conduct" in the wake of his April 15 flight to call attention to campaign finance reform.
A grand jury indicted Hughes on six charges that carry up to 9 1/2 years in prison.
Hughes, who lives in Ruskin, Florida, said he's received tremendous public support. The tail section of Hughes' gyrocopter carried a Postal Service logo, and Hughes was carrying letters for each member of Congress.
His next court appearance is June 20. He has been ordered wear a GPS monitoring device.
