Liverpool have opened talks with Tiago Ilori over a new contract.

The Portugal U21 international has two years remaining on contract but Liverpool want to renegotiate his terms of £18,000 per week.

The Hampstead-born centre-half, 22, joined Liverpool from Sporting Lisbon in September 2013 but has spent time on loan at Granada then Bordeaux.

He will be given a chance to show if he is ready to push for the first team during pre-season.

'We talked last week about the future of Tiago,' the defender's father Kola Ilori told radio station Antena 1, as reported by Portuguese publication Maisfutebol.

'They say he will have a chance and will go on the pre-season tour of Thailand.'

Kola also revealed Sunderland had shown interest in signing the defender on loan.

'There are other clubs interested, like Sunderland, but Sunderland is a very cold city,' he added
