How to solve the riddle of clingfilm: The best ways to avoid getting tied up in food wrap

  • Cling film boxes used to have a serrated metal edge to help tear pieces off
  • But health and safety measures meant that is now just a flimsy plastic edge
  • New gadgets and life hacks offer customers a solution to sticky problem

A sticky situation seems to have become even stickier.

Cling film has always been fiddly, but boxes of the food wrap used to have a fearsome serrated metal edge with which you'd tear off a piece.

Health and safety means the blade is now thin plastic, which is often too flimsy to do the job.

Some people have been shelling out on gadgets to solve the dilemma.

The Wrapmaster, available at Lakeland for £12.99, has a stainless steel cutting system, cleverly hidden away inside a plastic covering, which slices cling film with one press.

Alternatively, try some homespun solutions.

First, make sure you employ the hidden cardboard tabs on the sides of the box that most people don't think to use. By pushing them into the box, you can make sure the roll of film is held in place when you use it.

If the cling film keeps sticking to itself, store it in the freezer, which reduces its adhesiveness.

If, on the other hand, you find it difficult to make it stick, try wetting the outer edge of the container you want to cover.

Finally, if you can't find the end of the film, try putting a piece of sticky tape where you think it is, and pull forward.
