Same-sex marriage is legal nationwide: Supreme Court delivers landmark ruling to jubilant scenes across the United States

United States Supreme Court votes to legalise gay marriage across the country

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in a 5-4 decision that gay marriage is the law of the land. The landmark ruling, delivered just in time for Pride weekend festivities in San Francisco and New York City, says that the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees gays and lesbians must have the same right to marry as heterosexuals. The justices also ruled in the issue that has bitterly divided the nation that states without gay-marriage laws on the books must recognize gay marriages performed in other states. The decision came on what will be remembered as a seminal date in gay rights history. June 26 was also the calendar date that saw the high court rule on Lawrence v. Texas in 2003 and United States v. Windsor two years ago. All three majoroity decisions were written by Justice Anthony Kennedy.

At least 27 dead after terrorists gunned down 'tourists on sun loungers' on Tunisia beach: Families run for their lives and barricade themselves in rooms at hotel packed with Westerners

Tunisia terrorist attack as ISIS gunmen kills 27 tourists near Sousse

Gunmen have killed at least 27 people in an attack on two hotels in the popular holiday destination of Sousse. Militants, feared to be from ISIS, exchanged gunfire with security services on a beach packed with British holidaymakers. The attack took place at the Al-Qantawi resort in the city of Sousse, located 140 kilometres south of the capital Tunis on the Mediterranean coast. Elizabeth O'Brien, an Irish woman on holiday with her two sons in Sousse, described how she grabbed her children and ran for their lives when they heard gunfire erupting from one of the hotels. She said: 'I thought "oh my God, it sounds like gunfire", so I just ran to the sea to my children and grabbed our things and as I was running towards the hotel, the waiters and the security on the beach started saying "run, run run!" and we just ran to our room, which is like a little bungalow. So we are actually trapped in our room.' British tourist Gary Pine said: There was a mass exodus off the beach. My son was in the sea at the time and myself and my wife were shouting at him to get out and as he ran up he said I've just saw someone get shot.'
