That's a wee bit of a surprise! Festival-goers lining up for the toilet left speechless as marching bands, gospel choirs and dancers burst out of a 'magical' porta potty

It's certainly rare to find a pleasant surprise in a porta potty, but luckily for one group of festival goers, hilarity – rather than horror – awaited them inside the facilities at a recent New York music festival.

The prank, orchestrated by collective Improv Everywhere and dubbed The Magical Porta Potty, involved a trick portable toilet with an open back that would allow for a variety of surprise performers, including bands, dancers, and singers, to slip into the space and burst out of the door upon unsuspecting music fans.

The reactions of all the victims were recorded on video for the improv group's YouTube channel while they were attending New York City's Governors Ball Festival on Randall's Island.

Most of those pranked by the troupe clearly love the idea while others, not so much.

The first victim of the prank, a young woman in a pink top and jeans, opens the door and immediately exclaims: 'Oh my god!' before falling into a fit of laughter as a mariachi band wanders out the door.

The second mariachi surprise befalls a young man in a Hawaiian shirt who, instead of immediately jumping back or exclaiming, is simply stunned, slowly backing away as player after player emerges from the porta potty door.

In another instance a young woman in a crop top is shocked when she opens the door to the porta potty and a slew of yellow-clad gospel singers pour out into the area, singing 'glory, glory, Hallelujah'. But while she clearly loved the surprise, a man bun wearing prankee is less amused, immediately walking out of view.

One woman is also treated by a surprise performance by a 18-strong Bollywood dance troupe who leap out of the porta potty clad in orange and purple outfits.

But the best reaction was seen on two women who were waiting in line to use the facilities. The first, a blonde in a green shirt, opens the door and is greeted by a full marching band, immediately leaps backwards shouting expletives. The woman in an orange cap standing behind her looks simply flabbergasted with her mouth agape.

Creator and director of the video Charlie Todd explained on the Improv Everywhere website that the prank was a long time coming.  'We’ve been talking for a couple of years about staging an Improv Everywhere mission during the festival, and this year things finally came together. I’ve wanted to stage a prank with a trick Porta Potty for years, and this was the perfect opportunity.'

Before this prank, the company has pulled off over 100 other stunts including similar hilarious tips and tricks since starting out in 2001. The collective boasts over 1.7 million subscribers on YouTube.

The effect was created with the help of festival staff who cut a hole in the back of a porta potty and placed it within a row of toilets, leaving a hole in the back fencing to allow the performers to enter.

The pranksters then placed a go pro camera in the porta potty and other camera men filmed from atop the surrounding porta potties.

Overall, the creator deemed the 'mission' a success. 'One guy who had opened the door told me after one of the performances, “I’ve been to lots of festivals, but I’ve never had a performance that was just for me,"' he said.
