  • Three other children, aged three, five and seven, and a 23-year-old woman were also seriously injured

A driver accelerated to 95 mph on a residential street in Detroit while fleeing officers before striking and killing two young children and injuring three other children and an adult, police said according to the Miami Herald.

Police began chasing a Chevrolet Camaro with a firearms suspect inside, but lost sight of the vehicle. The car then jumped a curb and struck the children and an adult a few blocks away.

Family members have identified the two deceased children as seven-year-old Michael Angelo Jackson and his half-sister, three-year-old Makiah Jackson, according to ClickonDetroit.

'They was just playing outside enjoying their summertime,' said the children's devastated mother, Alicia Jackson.

The mom said she didn't know her children were hit until her mother told her.

The grandmother of two children who were struck, Nicole Jackson, 40, told the Detroit Free Press she was in her home when she heard the crash and ran outside.

Jackson's fiancé, Ronald Antczak, 43, said he ran outside too and saw a child that wasn't moving.

'It's not something you can describe, a kid lying lifeless in the street,' he said.

The six victims were taken to St. John Hospital, where two of the children were declared dead, Craig said.

The other victims are children aged three, five and seven, and a 23-year-old woman.

'It's tragic. It's a very difficult day,' said police chief James Craig.

Police arrested the driver and passenger from the car, including one who had a handgun, he said. One had injuries that weren't life-threatening.

The chase began about 7.30pm on Wednesday evening after officers activated lights on their police car and tried to pull over the Camaro, Craig said.

The chase on the city's east side lasted about 75 seconds.

The car drove away so fast that police briefly lost sight of the vehicle then officers saw a plume of smoke from the crash scene.

While residents are criticizing police for triggering a high speed chase in a residential neighborhood where kids were outside, Craig said the car had sped off before the crash and cops lost track of it until they heard the crash.

However, an eyewitness, who would only give her first name, Marquierite, told the Detroit Free Press that she saw the Camaro speed by with the squad car on its heels.

'Our prayers and hearts go out to the families and our officers are certainly struggling in the aftermath,' Craig said.

A GoFundMe account was set up to raise money to defray costs for a joint funeral, says a family member. It has so far raised over $400.
