Gonzalo Jara to be sold by angry Mainz: The prod was bad, but the threatrics were worse

Mainz are so enraged with the behaviour of Gonzalo Jara this week that they are willing to cut their losses and get rid this summer.

The former West Brom full back has been playing in the Bundesliga since leaving the Hawthorns this time last year.

But the club are ready to sell Jara already after his deplorable antics at the Copa America.

The 29-year-old was captured allegedly putting his finger on Edinson Cavani's backside during Chile’s quarter-final win over Uruguay.

That brought about severe embarrassment, although Mainz were more bothered about what followed – Jara theatrically throwing himself to the ground after Cavani flicked a hand out in tame retaliation.

Cavani was sent off during the last-eight clash but it is Jara who came away from the incident reproached, with claims in South America that he will be banned for the remainder of the tournament.

Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel couldn’t hide his anger after watching the episode.

‘He knows that if an offer comes, he can go,’ Heidel told Bild.

‘We do not tolerate that. More than the prod, however, it is what comes afterwards that makes me angry. I hate theatrics more than anything.’

Jara’s career is littered with disciplinary problems and he’s had spells at Brighton and Nottingham Forest as well as playing more than 50 games for West Brom.
