It's the current trend for young celebrities who want to show they have a cool edge to their style.

And Ireland Baldwin joined the ranks of those who are indulging a facial furniture on Friday posting a shot of herself sporting a nose ring.

The gold septum clasp was clearly a gift, as the 19-year-old said in the caption for the shot: Thank you to @jewelcult for all the beautiful goodies.'

Ireland isn't the only famous face to be seen wearing a septum ring - Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Kat Graham have also been spotted with the individual piercing.

The septum ring has a long history and means different things to different cultures. 

In some North American tribes, it is used as a right of passage.

Young boys would journey into the wilderness and then on their return would have the septum piercing to show they had become men.

The Aztec and Mayan’s wore jade and gold because of it’s religious significance. 

In warrior cultures, the septum was used to make them look notably fierce.

Historically Aboriginals did it to flatten their nose - which was the most desired look. 

Nostril piercings are also mentioned in the Bible - in Genesis 24:22 a nose ring was given as a gift to Rebekah.

It was 4,000 years ago there was the first recorded mention of the nostril piercing.

Ireland has been seen out and about  recently in her home of Los Angeles.

On Thursday she decided to ditch her new jewellery look and went for a sporty casual ensemble.

Wearing a blue hoodie and grey trousers and T-shirt, she wore her hair pulled back in a bun.

It seems she has recovered from a recent incident where she was seen in photos looking like she was severely battered and bruised as she walked around Malibu with her new boyfriend Jon Kasik.

A source revealed exclusively to DailyMail.com that Ireland was 'attacked' by three men.

The men had previously been following her according to the source.  

Ireland had been at Soba - a facility which she was visiting to deal with 'emotional trauma.'

She entered Soba shortly after splitting with her partner Angel Haze, who she was with for a year.

Soon after, Baldwin began dating Jon,, 23, who she met at the facility.
