How to get a waist like Helena Bonham Carter: Secrets of an A-list body

How to get the enviable physiques of the stars. The week: Helena Bonham Carter’s waist

Actress Helena Bonham Carter, renowned for her unconventional fashion sense, wore a sensational waist-cinching dress to a recent premiere that perfectly showed off her trim midriff.

The 49-year-old is not a follower of any particular gym routine, saying: ‘There is no [exercise] regimen that lasts longer than a day,’ she says, though she swims regularly.

‘There is no [exercise] regimen that lasts longer than a day,’ said Helena Bonham Carter, though she swims regularly. She also stays in shape by walking

She also stays in shape by walking, an activity she calls ‘the most painless exercise ever’.

What to try: The ‘stomach vacuum’ is a nifty little exercise that can be practised anywhere, even at your desk. It works the core muscles that help to accentuate the waist.

Sitting or standing, with feet planted firmly on the floor, put your hands on your hips and take a deep breath.

As you breathe out, suck in your stomach and abdominal muscles as tightly as you can, aiming to empty every last bit of air from your lungs.

Imagine you are fastening a belt around your waist very tightly to ensure you pull in the muscles as far as possible.

Hold your breath and your abdominal muscles for three to five seconds before breathing in again. Take a few breaths to recover and repeat.
