‘Top Gun 2′ Is Back In Development, And Might Star Tom Cruise

Top Gun is one of those movies that should, by every account, have a sequel. It did very well. It has a bankable star. And it’s not like you can’t tell that story again. And again. And again and again and again. You can.

But when Tony Scott took his own life several years ago, any effort to keep the franchise going was stopped for understandable reasons. However, Skydance CEO David Ellison, who recently gave us this crazy story about a Tom Cruise stunt, has hired a writer for the sequel, and says that it could very well star Tom Cruise, albeit 30 years after the first one.

Ellison offered:

“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”

Ellison went on to say that Maverick would be taking on drones in the sequel, which actually sounds pretty cool.
