Jaden Smith covered his natural dreadlocks with an afro wig while filming the 1970s-set Netflix series The Get Down in Manhattan on Monday.

The son of Will & Jada Pinkett Smith - who turns 17 next week - wore a bicep-baring mesh tank top, striped skinny trousers, and classic Converse.

In the 13-episode hip-hop series, the Malibu-born millennial plays a recurring character called Marcus 'Dizzee' Kipling, a 'psychedelically talented and enigmatic graffiti writer' from the Bronx.

'In the short time [Jaden] has joined our acting family, he has begun developing his The Get Down skill set,' director Baz Luhrmann told EW in a statement.

'[He's] taking lessons from the legendary graffiti artist Lady Pink of Wild Style fame, as well as steeping himself in the history and culture of the Bronx.'

Smith previously acted opposite his famous father in The Pursuit of Happyness in 2006 and the dismally-reviewed After Earth in 2013.

'Can't wait to present my musical side on the same level as my acting,' the 20-year-old actor tweeted on Sunday. 'I'm really gonna give the world something special. I'm focused.'

Justice Smith - who plays Radar in next month's Paper Towns - shared a rehearsal snap of Luhrmann directing him as Ezekiel in a romantic scene.
