Luis Suarez kept his promise to a young cancer patient when he delivered a signed Barcelona shirt to him in Montevideo on Thursday.

Suarez surprised Mateo in May when the cancer sufferer went to see his doctor for a check-up and was sat down for a private consultation with a ‘special’ doctor via video link. 

The boy was in tears when the mystery medic revealed himself as Suarez and told Mateo: ‘You are very brave, a fighter, so you must keep on going.’

He promised him a signed shirt if he continued to take his medication and follow his doctor’s instructions and was as good as his word when he visited the Hospital Pereira Rossell in Montevideo this week with his wife Sofia.


Both donned white coats as they met with the children.

Suarez is a sponsor of the Perez Scremini foundation which focuses on curing childhood cancer, working out of the Pereira Rossell Hospital.

Doctor Ney Castillo tweeted: ‘Today the brave children of the Scremini Perez foundation have two marvellous doctors to visit them. Thank you Luis and Sofia.’

Castillo is a former Newcastle Victoria Infirmary fellow in Pediatric Oncology and a keen supporter of the Magpies.
