The family's latest addition was born on June 13 in Washington, D.C., and the little bundle of joy weighed in at 8 lbs, 3 oz.

'The entire family is thriving during their first few weeks home,' a representative added, of the now family of three.

Alexandra's late father Christopher - who passed away on October 10, 2004 after suffering a cardiac arrest - had shot to fame as Superman, a role he played on four occasions before hanging up his cape in 1987.

He became a staunch advocate of stem cell research into spinal injuries after falling from thoroughbred Buck – the horse he bought while filming 1994 movie Village of the Damned – shattering his first and second vertebrae.

His dedicated activism led to the development of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, through which The Big Idea has been launched.

And it seems the late star's namesake has already showed support for the foundation, reportedly donning a Team Reeve in training T-shirt.

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation shared that heartwarming bit of news as they took to their Twitter account to celebrate Alexandra's new addition.

'Congrats to Alexandra Reeve Givens on the birth of her son Christopher Russel! He is already rocking #TeamReeve gear,' the foundation tweeted.

Alexandra, the daughter of Christopher and Gae Exton, currently serves as a senior counsel in the United States Senate and an adjunct professor at her alma mater, Columbia Law School.

Her husband Garren works in the Obama administration as the director of the Presidential Innovation Fellows program.

The new parents met while they were both studying at Yale University, and tied the knot in 2008.
