Rochelle Humes and Nick Grimshaw enjoy a relaxed dinner date in Manchester... as X Factor auditions are cancelled after death of Simon Cowell's mother Julie

They've both been beyond excited about starting their new X Factor roles on Monday.

But Xtra Factor host Rochelle Humes and new judge Nick Grimshaw looked downcast as they left San Carlo restaurant in Manchester city centre on Sunday night after the first day of auditions were cancelled by ITV bosses - following the death of show mogul Simon Cowell's mother, Julie.

Dressed down for what was probably going to be an early night before her first day at her new job, Rochelle, 26, opted for comfort in a low-key blue tracksuit.

The Saturdays star teamed the acid wash style with a pair black and white Chanel espadrilles and a studded black handbag.

Despite her casual ensemble, the beauty still managed to look glamorous as she wore her luscious brown locks in loose waves and hid her pretty face beneath a pair of aviator sunglasses, a staple in any celebrity wardrobe.

Always one to rock a more alternative look, the Radio 1 DJ finished the look with a pair of black ankle boots and his favourite leather jacket.

But what should have been a night of celebrating took a turn for the worse as news broke that the mother of their boss, Simon Cowell, had passed away.

The sad news has meant Cowell and ITV bosses cancelled Monday's audition in the city.

'They were due to start today and carry on into Tuesday and Wednesday. Today's have been cancelled and we have not made any decisions beyond that,' a spokesman for Syco Entertainment told MailOnline on Sunday evening.

Cowell's brother, Tony, confirmed Julie had passed away aged 89 on Sunday night, leaving the family 'devastated'.

He said in a statement: 'Very sad night tonight. We will all miss Mum so very much. She was the heart and soul of our family.'

A spokesperson for the family added: 'Today our beloved mum Julie passed away. Anyone who had met her would know what a truly special and kind lady she was.

'We are heartbroken and will miss her terribly, but she is now at peace.'

Before hearing the heartbreaking news, the 2015 X Factor squad appeared to be buzzing about this week's auditions.

'MOOORRRNNIINNGG! It's X Factor eve! Day 1 of auditions tomorrow in Manchester hope my home city does me proud,' Nick wrote on Sunday morning.
