Jane Fonda, pictured above at the Cannes Film Festival in May, said it is very difficult for women over 40 to get work in the acting world
Jane Fonda has hit out at sexism in the acting industry and claimed it is 'very difficult' for women over 40 to get work because they are seen as having 'lost their beauty and attractiveness'.
The 77-year-old American actress said because of her age, she is 'surprised' to still find film and TV scripts landing on her doorstep.
Former fitness guru Jane also shared her top tips for maintaining a youthful look, which include following a clean diet and getting at least eight hours sleep a night.
The two-time Academy Award winner, who has starred in a number of hit movies since the 1960s including Barbarella and Coming Home, spoke out about the inequality female actors face.
'I'm surprised I'm still getting opportunities because, for women, once you reach 40 or 50 it's very difficult to find work,' she told the Daily Mirror.
'The perception of men as they get older is vastly different from women.
'Men are seen as becoming elegant and more desirable, whereas women are seen as having lost their beauty and attractiveness.
'It's as if we become devalued because only our beauty defines us.'
Thrice-married Jane's latest hit is Netflix show Grace and Frankie, in which she appears as Grace alongside Lily Tomlin, her co-star in 1980 movie Nine To Five.

The pair portray two women whose husbands, played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston, fall in love.
Mother-of-three Jane added that women are under 'terrible pressure' to look 'as young as possible'.
She said that 'society values youth' and while it is 'not fair' it is just 'the way it is'.
Jane, who lives in Los Angeles with her boyfriend of six years, music producer Richard Perry, has always worked hard to maintain her complexion and trim figure.

The fitness queen, who was famous for her leg warmers, kick-started the aerobics craze in 1980s and her workout videos have since sold more than 17 million copies.
While insisting she has always 'remained very physically active', Jane has had a number of health struggles including breast cancer, osteoporosis and back problems.
She went under the knife to fix the latter, and has also had an artificial knee and a titanium hip inserted.

Despite this she told the Daily Mirror that she works out 'almost every day' and eats 'the healthiest organic food' she can find.
Having admitted in the past that she has dabbled with cosmetic surgery, Jane said she makes sure she gets 'eight or nine hours' sleep a night and tries to stay 'out of the sun' to protect her skin.
Jane said she is certainly 'much more confident' and 'happier' than she has been in years, adding that she is now 'more secure' in her own identity.
Jane's most renowned film is the 1968 hit Barbarella, above, where she starred opposite British actor David Hemmings
