But 18-year-old singer Cody Simpson shrugged off romance rumours with mate Justin Bieber's ex in an interview with Australia's Today Show on Monday morning.

'It's all sweet, like I try to be friends with everyone,' the Australian told reporter Richard Wilkins, after he was spotted hanging out with 22-year-old Selena in California, last week.

Awkward history aside, these two ladies looked just lovely at the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2015 event here in Palm Springs.

Naturally, the girls stepped out in the designer of the evening, with Selena opting for the complete look - matching shoes and all - straight off the Fall 2015 runway.

Leather and lace has long been a favoured combination - the perfect contrast between feminine and androgynous, with the lace details giving the biker leather a girly twist.

While being stark opposites in terms of materials, they seems to go hand in hand and look perfect here on Selena's dress.

Cody Simpson shrugs off romance rumours with Selena Gomez

'I'm always good mates with everyone and stay on the good side of people. I never let any bad blood between anyone,' he added.

Having said that, Cody seems to be relieved his romance with 20-year-old American model Gigi is over, after the pair announced their split in May via a joint statement.

He told the Today Show: 'I was in a highly publicised relationship for a while and now it's kind of nice to be able to just chill and like work on my music'.

Following his recent split with Gigi, the Australian singer has been spotted partying it up with his mates, and leaving nightclubs with a string of mystery girls.

The young star's big nights out have happened a few days after rumours emerged that he had begun dating Selena Gomez.

The questions over the pair's relationship came after the former Disney star uploaded a snap of them enjoying ice cream to social media.

Selena captioned the photo: 'These days are always the best days,' while Cody's mother Angie reposted the snap onto her account just moments after.

The pair's hang out came two days after Selena's ex and Cody's close pal, Justin Bieber arrived in Australia and model Gigi flew out to London with her rumoured new beau Joe Jonas.

Last week the blond singer shared the cover art for his first album Free produced with Coasthouse Records, his own independent label launched after he parted ways with Atlantic Records.

Free is set to be released digitally on July 10, with its tracks seemingly reflective of Cody's transition into a more mature music artist.

And in his latest music, he explains how his youth and limited life experience has shaped some of the decisions he has made of late.

Encouraging fans to download his new string of songs online, he explained the motive behind the album.

He wrote: '"free" captures a moment in my life filled with positivity and stoke and relief I can get a fresh start as a musician. no more corporate or record label influence and the compromise of artistry for short term commercial success (sic)'.

Meanwhile in a recent interview with news.com.au, Cody explained his is not hesitant to reach out to other stars whom he finds inspirational in the music world.

He told the publication: 'John Mayer is the epitome of the lead guitar player so I sent him an email with a bunch of my music and he sent back really detailed advice'.

Cody will perform on the Gold Coast on Friday August 7 and in Sydney on Saturday August 8.
