PAUL NEWMAN AT THE SWALEC STADIUM: Just when it seemed the ghosts of recent Ashes past had returned to haunt England, up popped Joe Root and then, thrillingly, Ben Stokes to show Australia that things just might be a little different this time. All the pain and hurt of the 5-0 humiliation that led to so many recriminations was in danger of flooding back when England crashed to 43 for three on the first morning of the most important Test series of them alll.
EXCLUSIVE: United head back to Saints for talks as Van Gaal wants Schneiderlin deal done before US pre-season tour
MIKE KEEGAN: Manchester United have re-entered into negotiations with Southampton over Morgan Schneiderlin. Sportsmail understands a representative of the Old Trafford club travelled to the south coast on Wednesday in a bid to thrash out a deal for the France international. Murray puts in an A-list performance in front of Prince William, Beckham and Co on Centre Court as he beats Pospisil to set-up semi-final showdown against rival Federer
MIKE DICKSON: Andy Murray set up a classic Friday teatime battle with Roger Federer after seeing off the game challenge of Canadian outsider Vasek Pospisil on Wednesday. Watched by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the Royal Box, and David Beckham in the 'cheaper' seats, Murray made it through to his sixth Wimbledon semi-final with a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 victory that was twice interrupted by rain.
Federer cruises into semi-final with highly impressive victory over battling Simon
Roger Federer beat Gilles Simon 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 at Wimbledon on Wednesday to reach the semi-finals. The Swiss was rarely troubled by Simon, from France, and will face the winner of Andy Murray and Vasek Pospisil. The duo were held up by two rain delays on court one, but it did not derail Federer's authoritative display.
MARTIN SAMUEL AT TEST: All this pomp is such a flaming waste of time. Masterful Root provided the fireworks we all wanted to see
MARTIN SAMUEL, CHIEF SPORTS WRITER, IN CARDIFF: Joe Root taught England a valuable lesson: the virtue of getting the hell on with it. Root's century in 118 balls was the fastest in a first Ashes Test and inside the top six for an Englishman in any Ashes series. That he came in with his team floundering on 43 for three made it more impressive, although it is hard to conclude they were anything but architects of their own downfall early on.

TOP SPIN - ASHES SPECIAL: One of the most curious features of the build-up to this Ashes, during which everyone who was anyone was being quoted to within an inch of their media-trained lives, was the relative silence of Ian Bell. It's not that we were expecting Bell to provide a slew of lurid headlines.

Sanchez is the main man but Ozil should be Wenger's No 10... he makes Arsenal tick and can lead them to Premier League title glory
MATT MORLIDGE: Alexis Sanchez displayed some of his best form last season operating in behind the striker. He is Arsenal's most dangerous weapon, the player Arsene Wenger looks to for individual inspiration. But who will be the man charged with leading the Gunners' Premier League title charge from the No 10 role? Mesut Ozil. And rightly so.
