The FTSE 100 index of leading shares in London fell 50 points or 0.8 per cent to 6,535.2 by mid-afternoon, while the German and French leading indices were both down 2 per cent. But market volatility was not as bad as many in the City had feared after Yanis Varoufakis sensationally quit following the country's overwhelming vote to reject the austerity terms demanded by international creditors.
RACHEL RICKARD STRAUS: Ofgem's meddling put an end to green energy tariffs - and I hope it gets thoroughly told off for it
A couple of years ago most energy suppliers offered one, for those who wanted to take some control of where their energy came from. Now there are only a few on the market, and none from the big six. It's not that demand dwindled, or that the energy suppliers had anything against them - it was the work of Ofgem that led to their demise.

TONY HETHERINGTON: Why would you forget a £29,000 debt you took out with Northern Rock?
About eight or nine years ago, my wife and I thought about taking out an equity release scheme on our bungalow, but in the end chose not to go ahead with it. Now that we are both in our 70s, we decided to restart the process with Aviva, only to be told that we already have a scheme running with Northern Rock and have already supposedly drawn thousands of pounds.

Buyers in London need to find more than nine times the average salary to buy their first home
The latest figures from building society Nationwide show that homes being bought by first-time buyers in the capital are priced at 9.4 times the average London wage, an all-time high. The ratio will be pointed to by many to suggest the market has become a speculative bubble.
Ring the changes: How to save money when using your mobile abroad and what you need to know about the roaming reforms

Alcohol-related crime goes up despite council crackdown as stores are forced to remove booze from shelves
A clampdown on the sale of strong lager and cider, which has infuriated the drinks industry, is failing to quell alcohol-related violence, according to crime figures in one of the areas which pioneered the scheme. Portsmouth Council introduced its Reducing the Strength campaign in November 2013, putting pressure on retailers to stop selling beers and ciders stronger than 6.5 per cent alcohol by volume (ABV).
Bidders stalk the UK's top landlord Grainger in '£1bn takeover' after investment group Crystal Amber takes 3% stake
The interest follows news last week that activist investment group Crystal Amber has taken a 3 per cent stake and is agitating for changes to boost returns. The group is valued on the stock market at £930million or 225p a share, but analysts believe any bid would have to be at least £1.25billion.
INVESTMENT EXTRA: China's stock market tests savers' fortitude but investors should steel their nerves and look at the long term picture
Barely a month ago, champagne corks were popping as investors toasted an astonishing stock market run with China's Shanghai Composite Index reaching a seven-year high. Today, their fizz has fallen horribly flat. The index has since plummeted by 30 per cent to send many savers into a panic. Lurching markets mean the huge fall since the market peak in mid-June has wiped a staggering £1.8trillion off the value of the index - and nearly all the gains made since January have disappeared.

Could buy-to-let boom be burst by the BoE? Part-time landlords could threaten economy as they will be 'more vulnerable' when rates rise, it warns
The Bank of England will monitor the sector closely while the Treasury will consult later this year on what tools the Bank could use in relation to buy-to-let lending.
