  • De'Andre Johnson,19, had been suspended from the team since the June 24 assault at Yianni's Nightclub in Tallahassee
  • Video shows the moment the freshman quarterback got into an argument with a woman at a bar and then punched her in the head
  • The 'Mr Football 2014' was charged with misdemeanor battery and has now been dismissed from the team after the CCTV footage was released

Florida State University dismissed freshman quarterback De'Andre Johnson from the team on the same day that prosecutors released video showing him punching a woman at a bar.

In a statement on Monday, coach Jimbo Fisher announced Johnson's immediate dismissal. The 19-year-old quarterback had been suspended after the June 24 assault.

In the security camera video released by the State Attorney's Office, it appears the woman - a fellow student - and Johnson were trying to get a position at the bar inside Yianni's Nightclub in Tallahassee, and Johnson jostled her.

The woman raises a fist and shouts at Johnson before he grabs her fist and holds it down. She then raises her other hand and swings.

It's not clear whether she made contact, but Johnson responds by punching her in the face while still grabbing her other hand.

She staggers, and her nose begins bleeding.

According to court documents, the woman sustained bruising under left eye, swelling to the left cheek and upper lip, and a small cut near the bridge of her nose.

She claims she raised her fist in self-defense, in an attempt to free her other arm from Johnson's grip.

Johnson has been charged with misdemeanor battery.

Johnson's attorney Jose Baez has since released the quarterback's version of events.

According to Baez, the woman in question started shouting racial epithets at Johnson when he accidentally made contact with her walking up to the bar.

Baez says Johnson then 'tried to deescalate the situation' but the woman 'kneed him in the groin area' and 'took another swing before he retaliated'.

'It wasn't until she struck him twice that he reacted,' Baez said. 'But he is very...He is very regretful that he didn't turn around and walk away immediately.'

He added: 'He makes no excuses for what happened.'

Baez says Johnson is trying to 'learn and grow' from the experience, and is currently participating in community service and faith-based programs 'focused on battered women, substance abuse and the empowerment of children'.

'De'Andre is extremely embarrassed by this situation and would like to express his heartfelt apologies to everyone, including those who were directly affected, coach Fisher and his teammates, the entire Florida State University community, as well as his family and friends,' Baez said.

Baez famously represented Casey Anthony in 2011, when the Florida woman went on trial for the murder of her two-year-old daughter Caylee. Anthony was found not guilty.

This isn't the first time that Florida State has been hit with an assault scandal.

Former FSU quarterback Jameis Winston, who was drafted to the Tampa Bay Bucaneers this year, was once accused of rape stemming from a 2012 incident.

Winston always claimed that the sex was consensual and he was never formally charged in the incident.
