The planet has united together to use the alien technology which they harnessed from spaceships and data left by the invaders after the last attack, in a bid to protect the globe from another invasion.
However they are soon threatened with an alien onslaught so huge it looks very much like the Earth will not be able to withstand it.
The cast, who are currently shooting the sequel in New Mexico, gave a talk last week about the new movie and what to expect.
Joined by director Roland Emmerich, it gave an indication of the sheer scale of the movie saying:

Liam Hemsworth, who is joining the cast as Jake Morrison
Check it out: Director, writer and producer Roland Emmerich has been posting sneak peeks at some of the machines which will feature
Will Smith, who played Captain Steven Hiller in the original, is not returning to reprise his role.
Emmerich told the NY Daily News in 2013, he would be 'too expensive' and 'too much of a marquee name.'
Instead his son will feature Dylan Hiller, played by Jessie Usher.
The actor said his portrayal has been influenced by Will's character: 'He grew up in the world that his dad saved. You can only imagine what being the son of the world's saviour is kinda like.'
Emmerich revealed: 'We deal with the disappearance of Will Smith in a very kind of respectful manner he is still part of this universe.
'But it is mainly a kind of handover from this generation to the next.'
