Battle Stations: Sherman Assault

Operation Cobra was one of the decisive victories in World War II. Within two days, George S. Patton and his troops managed to penetrate 12 miles behind enemy lines, a remarkable feat, achieved by a combination of the General's fighting ability and the Sherman tank.

With a top speed of 30mph, the tank made short work of rival German machines but such pace was only achieved because of the flimsy armour protecting the outside, turning the tanks - literally - into death traps.

Archive film brings this victory to life but also reveals the terrible cost.
