Millions shared photo of 'Baby Doe' who washed up dead in Boston – but her identity is still a mystery

  • Unidentified girl was found June 25 by a dog walker near Boston
  • She was wrapped in a zebra-patterned blanket and polka dot pants
  • Artist's impression of the girl was viewed 45million times on Facebook
  • Police admit they still do not know who the child is or how she died

The identity of a four-year-old girl whose body washed up on a beach remains a mystery, despite millions of people sharing her photo.

Police are no closer to identifying the girl - dubbed Baby Doe - after an artists impression of her was viewed more than 45million times on Facebook.

Investigators are also still trying to determine how the child died after her body was found stuffed inside a trash bag on the shore of Boston Harbour last month.

There were no obvious signs of injury on the girl's body and an autopsy performed by the state medical examiner could not determine a cause of her death, according to investigators.

Police are now waiting for the results of toxicology tests to see if the child, who was found with a zebra-patterned blanket and wearing polka dot pants, was poisoned or drugged.

During a press conference investigators revealed they had received 'dozens and dozens' of tips from members of the public and led to welfare checks on 20 girls of the same age.

All were found to be safe and well.

'It has by far shattered our previous record for Facebook views,' said Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley, whose office is overseeing the investigation.

Detectives have not revealed how long they believe the girl had been dead for when the grim discovery was made.

Her tiny, lifeless body was uncovered by a dog walker at Deer Island, which juts out into Massachusetts Bay just beyond Logan International Airport.

She weighed just 30 pounds and was about three-and-a-half feet tall.

Detectives also don't know if the girl lived in Massachusetts or came from another state.

They refused to say whether the bag containing her body washed up on shore or appeared to have been left on the beach.

During a news conference yesterday, Conley spoke directly to the girl's parents or guardians: 'Please step forward, clear your conscience and help us identify this young child.'

He would not be drawn on whether they were the focus of the investigation.

People from Maine to California, Canada and Puerto Rico have shared the computer generated image of Baby Doe, with many of them expressing sorrow or anger over the girl's death.

'How can someone just throw a child away?' wrote one woman from Arizona.

'This is just horrible, no one is missing this little angel!' wrote another woman from Clovis, California.

Barbara Smith, 67, of Missoula, Montana, said she has shared the girl's image three times and plans to share it again and again until investigators figure out who she was and how she died.

'I'm about to become a great-grandmother, so it just touches you,' she said.

'It's sad that there was a little girl out there of her age that was found by herself and nobody has claimed her.'

State police spokesman David Procopio said investigators are grateful to the public for 'caring about this little innocent'.

'But we continue our request for leads,' he said.

'We need people to continue to look at her and think about her and let us know if anything in their memory clicks.'
