Spackman is new Barnsley boss

Nigel Spackman was today confirmed as the new manager of First Division Barnsley.

The 40-year-old, who has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Tykes, takes charge at Oakwell following the resignation of Dave Bassett last month.

The former Chelsea, Liverpool and Rangers midfielder had been out of the game since quitting Sheffield United in 1998, frustrated at having to sell the club's top players despite taking them to the brink of the play-offs.

Spackman kept in touch with events in the Nationwide League through his work for Sky television and he also continued to improve his coaching skills, working with the England under-18s and scouting for the senior side.
