Went The Day Well?

After Humphrey Jennings' Second World War propaganda documentary, Fires Were Started, was shown at Christmas, Alberto Cavalcanti, his former producer and a fellow member of the government's GPO Film Unit, presents a work in the same genre.

Leslie Banks stars in this highly realistic wartime drama, set over three days in the English village of Bramley End, about the search for Fifth Columnists - Germans in disguise.

The tautness of the action owes as much to Graham Greene, whose story The Lieutenant Died Last provides the basis for the script, as it does to Cavalcanti's direction.
