  • Singled out hat-trick hero Carli Lloyd, asking: 'What have you been eatin'?'

President Obama joked with the U.S women's soccer team during a phone call congratulating them on their 5-2 thrashing of Japan in the World Cup final.

The Commander in Chief called the victorious squad on Wednesday as they continued to celebrate being crowned world champions.

The players sat on the floor as coach Jill Ellis put her phone on loudspeaker.

'Hey coach,' Obama first said on the call, which was filmed and posted on the White House Twitter feed.

She then asked how he was, too which he replied: 'Pretty good but not as good as you.'

He described how he sat down to watch Sunday's game but then joked: 'You guys kinda took the suspense out of it', adding that the game in Vancouver, Canada, was virtually over after 10 minutes.

Ellis then said: 'That was the aim.'

'It was so much fun to watch and I want to congratulate you,' he added, before singling out Carli Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick to take her side to their third World Cup title.

He asked: 'Carli, what have you been eatin'?' prompting the players in the room to burst out laughing.

'You can come out and run on the field with me if you want,' the midfielder said.

'I'll do that for about 30 seconds and then I'll stop,' the president responded.

During the call the president invited the team to the White House, but it was not clear when they would go.

He added the team had made the country proud, and thanked them for their effort.

Their historic victory will be celebrated in a ticker-tape parade in New York on Friday.

The parade will travel through the city's so-called Canyon of Heroes, a cavernous route through towering skyscrapers in downtown Manhattan.

The last ticker-tape parade in the city was held for the New York Giants' Super Bowl victory in 2012.

The home celebrations got underway for the World Cup winners on Tuesday. The Americans were welcomed to downtown Los Angeles by an estimated crowd of 10,000 cheering fans at a rally in the first stop on a victory tour.

The first stateside appearance was a raucous party in front of fans who began camping out before dawn on short notice. Abby Wambach joyously lifted the World Cup trophy while the players led the crowd in chants of 'I Believe That We Just Won!'

Lloyd's hat trick in the final propelled the U.S. women to their record third World Cup title.

The Americans hadn't won soccer's biggest prize since 1999, but Lloyd believes this team has done something comparably groundbreaking.
