Vera Lynn watches footage of herself visting British soldiers in Burma. 'Where are they?' she wonders aloud. It adds a sense of reality to scenes so shocking they might be other-worldly.

American Marines view killings they themselves filmed. 'We lived through it, didn't we?' says one, in genuine disbelief.

And there's Dick Lee, who breaks down telling of a prisoner-of-war comrade who died racked with disease, then catches himself. 'I'm talking about one person, but there are so many who suffered that way. Unbearable.' It is.
