Ingredients to avoid

One ingredient to avoid at all costs when it comes cleansing products is mineral oil, says Amanda. 'Many manufacturers use it because it's cheap, but baby oil, petroleum jelly - or anything containing mineral oil - will tend to sit on the skin and block pores.

'Read your labels. Vegetable, plant and nut oils are far more skin-friendly and nourishing.' You should also reassess your skin and your cleansing regime every six months.

Angela Lenci, managing director of the Escape Spa in Clerkenwell, London, says: 'Climate, hormones, age and lifestyle can all have a dramatic effect on our complexions. What worked for you last summer almost certainly won't do the trick now.'

So if you wondered why your

skin looked great in July but feels dry now, it's probably your cleanser that's at fault.
