A spring clean for your skin

by PENNY SMITH, Daily Mail

Cleansing is a vital element of any skin-care routine, particularly in winter when extra make-up, central heating and lack of sunshine can contribute to blocked pores and dry, flaky skin.

But, according to the experts, most of us don't know how to clean our skin properly and so suffer with unhealthy, sallow complexions.

I've always been meticulous about taking off my make-up before I go to bed but, over the years, my routine has changed.

In my teens, I was strictly an Anne French cleansing milk girl. Not only did that 1970s favourite take off my make-up, but it was surprisingly good at getting greasy marks out of clothes, too.

Later, I graduated to Lancome, after getting some free samples from somewhere on my way to pick peaches in France.

Impressed by Lancome's cleanse, tone and moisturise routine, I could barely afford the range, but the bottles did last the entire year I was away.

Now that I'm nearing the age of

six in dog years, I use Dermalogica's cleansing cream and eye make-up remover, washed off with warm water and followed by a nice smothering of their Skin Smoothing Cream. (I discovered the range when I went to one of the company's salons for a facial.)

Has it worked? Do I have the skin of a newborn baby? Well, I don't know for sure. But in certain dim light, I swear I could pass for my mother when she was my age.

Natural skincare guru Amanda Lacey says: 'If you want a clear complexion, it's absolutely vital to cleanse your skin thoroughly before you go to bed.

'As we sleep, the skin renews and recharges itself, so make-up, pollution and oily deposits will block pores and cause infection and irritation if they're not removed.'

Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type is important - but when faced with shelf upon shelf of different products, how do you make a decision?
