Immaculate Macs

Spring's new macs ensure that you beat any downpour in style. Last year it was the trench that made fashion news, but this season sees the return of something simpler in the rainwear department.

Designers Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs both helped to start this trend. They opted for a fly-front, knee-length design, which perfectly compliments all the current trouser and skirt lengths.

The bonus of this uncomplicated shape is that it is so much easier to wear and will go over everything already in your wardrobe. It also gives you the chance to really experiment, so try it with new colours, textures and patterns, and really make your outfit fun.

French Connection's pale blue raincoat in a lightweight cotton is guaranteed to be just that. The Seventies-inspired design falls just below the knee, has subtle shoulder pads and is fitted to enhance the curves of the body. Its pastel hue gives you the opportunity to wear vivid narrow stripes and wide flares under-neath.

The lime zip-front raincoat by German company Gil Bret, which specialises in coats and rainwear, is generously cut, shorter in length and more of an A-line shape. Spring 2001 for them means strong colours in modern shapes. Wear this design with a knee-length skirt for a touch of the Fifties.

There's a strong feel of youthful rock and roll with H&M's preppy look. Their cherry red raincoat is mannishly stylish, with its neat collar and slanting pockets.

Comfortably casual, it is just the right shape to wear with stone- coloured cropped trousers, a cotton roll-neck sweater and soft leather trainer mules.

Jeff Banks's range for Debenhams, Locker, which is now in its eighth season, produces fantastic sporty separates and crisp-cut macs. Simple and very wearable, the Velcro fastening front adds a contemporary touch.
