Reshuffle follows Mandelson's demise

Prime Minister Tony Blair was today set to plug the final gap in his ministerial team following the dramatic resignation of Peter Mandelson as Northern Ireland Office Secretary.

Brian Wilson's successor as Scotland Office Minister will be announced during the day, Downing Street said, the latest piece in the mini reshuffle that followed Mr Mandelson's departure.

Mr Wilson was moved to the Foreign Office to replace Peter Hain when the new line-up was announced last night. Mr Hain has swapped his Foreign Office brief for that of Energy Minister at the Department of Trade and Industry.

He replaces Helen Liddell, who has stepped into Dr John Reid's shoes as Secretary of State for Scotland.

Mr Blair has placed his trust in Dr Reid to take over Mr Mandelson's role as Northern Ireland Secretary during a critical juncture in the peace talks.
