'I did a lot of bad things': Magic Mike XXL star Channing Tatum reveals his dark past of being a stripper at the age of 19

He used his past job as a stripper as inspiration for Magic Mike but Channing Tatum has revealed there was a dark and seedy side to his former career.

The movie star revealed on Monday that he did many things while working as a stripper in LA nightclubs in the nineties that he now doesn't dare to speak of.

'It was one complete year of down-the-rabbit-hole crazy. I am glad I moved on ... it definitely has some seedy, darker sides,' he told The Daily Telegraph on the red carpet at the Sydney premiere of his latest flick Magic Mike XXL.

The 35-year-old also admitted he 'did a lot of bad things for one dollar bills' while working as an exotic dancer when he was just 19.

It comes after he previously told how he would earn anywhere between US$50 (AUD$67.28) to US$150 (AUD$201.83) each night.

But Tatum, who is now father to two-year-old daughter Everly with wife Jenna Dewan, added that being a stripper isn't conducive to being in a relationship.

'Just think about it: you have your wife or your girlfriend and then you go and basically run your junk all over women as a job, that can get confusing,' he told AAP.

But he insisted playing a stripper on screen is far less problematic.

'You keep your junk away from each other, for the most part, that's way more choreographed than you could imagine,' he said.

The actor added that he hopes the film encourages 'equal opportunity objectification' - a statement the film's producer Reid Carolin agreed with.

He told the Guardian Australia: 'We are objectifying men and saying women can look at men the same way men have been looking at women on screen for years.'

The actor was in Australia for the Sydney premiere of the Magic Mike sequel alongside co-star Joe Manganiello who said it wasn't really that hard to bring some comedy to the film considering its subject matter.

'Male stripping is funny, it just is. You would have to work so hard to work around the comedy, the innate comedy of male stripping,' he said.

'So I think this time around the movie is centred more around the guys and the ensemble of dancers. It's unavoidable.'

Magic Mike XXL will be released in cinemas across Australia on Thursday, July 9.
