Rangers new boy Michael Ball choked back the tears as he drove out of Everton's Bellefield training ground for the final time.

The defender, 21, who will seal a £6.5m move today, cut short his farewells after almost breaking down in front of his former team-mates.

The England international said: 'The tears were on their way. I didn't want my friends to see me like that so I got in my car.

'I was hurt that Everton wanted to let me go. Now I am just happy I'm going to a huge club like Rangers.

'As soon as I met the chairman David Murray and he showed me the facilities I was hooked on the idea of signing. Hopefully I'm going to get European football here.'

SOUTHAMPTON last night moved a step nearer to signing AC Milan's Oliver Bierhoff. Saints manager Stuart Gray wants the German international, 32, to lead his attack this season and is close to agreeing terms on a free transfer.

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Graeme Souness is preparing to make a final £3.5m bid for Liverpool's Djimi Traore. The Frenchman, 21, started last season at left back but failed to reclaim his place after injuring his thigh in November.

DAVE BEASANT is thinking over a move to Portsmouth. The goalkeeper, 42, who was about to sign for Birmingham, has been approached by Portsmouth after Aaron Flahavan died in a car crash at the weekend.
