The star of the New York Giants defense, Pierre-Paul is understood to have burnt his palm and three fingers, suffering nerve damage to a digit.

After news of the injury broke, the Giants recently reneged on a $60million contract offer. It is understood that Pierre-Paul, who was involved in a contract wrangle with the franchise, did not plan on signing the deal.

And nor will he agree to sign the franchise tag until he is ready to play, report NFL.com.

A defensive end, Pierre-Paul uses his hand holding off opponents, so how he can handle the injury remains to be seen.

After his breakthrough season in 2011, injuries curtailed Pierre-Paul’s progress for the next two years, but he made 77 tackles and recorded 12.5 sacks last season.

Pierre-Paul’s injury comes seven years after another Giants player was injured near an American holiday.

Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the thigh in a nightclub two days after Thanksgiving in 2008.
