'The truth is in there': Mulder and Scully's new quest hinted at in X-Files teaser trailer that shows the agents back in action for the first time
Once it was 'out there' but in 2016, the truth will be 'in there.'
A new teaser trailer for The X-Files revival series has dropped the first hints about what Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully will be up to in their highly-anticipated TV return.
As Mulder, played by David Duchovny, is seen from behind standing on an elevated walkway inside a large warehouse-type building, the actors' voice is heard saying: 'I believe that what we're looking for is in the X-files.'
'I'm more certain than ever that the truth is in there.'

Back in action: FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are seen bursting into a darkened room, guns drawn, in the first footage released from the new X-Files revival series
Then, in the first glimpse of new footage. Mulder and Scully, played by Gillian Anderson, are tantalizingly seen bursting into a dark room with guns drawn and flashlights on.
As the iconic characters sweep the shabby dwelling, Anderson is heard responding to Mulder.
'I've heard the truth, Mulder. Now what I want are the answers.'
Change of direction: Mulder, played by David Duchovny, is seen illuminated against the windows of a large warehouse-type building as he's heard saying: 'The truth is in there'
Excitement: Fans of The X-Files expressed their delight on Twitter at the very short look at Mulder and Scully together again
Atmospheric: It's clear that X-Files creator Chris Carter is determined to keep the signature dark look of the original series
Danger: The FBI Agents who investigate alien activity and the paranormal face a new threat in the revival series
Spooky: Duchovny and Anderson are only glimpsed by the light of their flashlights but both are back in FBI-issue suits
Can't wait: Fans appear to be embracing the idea of revisiting old episodes of the show ahead of the six new episodes that will begin airing on January 24, 2016
It's only a couple of seconds but the scene definitely set fans talking.
'Today is a magical freaking day,' tweeted Twitter user @marisaroffman.
The short promo was released by Fox as a way to encourage people to revisit the original series that ran from 1993 to 2002 and had 201 episodes.
If fans watch one episode a day from July 7, starting with the pilot episode, they'll be done just in time to watch the first of the six new revival episodes that will air at 10 p.m. on Sunday January 24.
He's back: Mulder and Scully's nemesis Cigarette Smoking Man, played by Willian B. Davis, keeps the conspiracy theories going
So is he: Another primary antagonist Alex Krycek, played by Nicholas Lea, is also seen in the teaser trailer
The video recaps some of the best-known and most-loved scenes from the long-running show and naturally includes alien abductions, UFOs, black oil virus patients and, yes he's back, Cigarette Smoking Man.
As the millisecond clips flash by one after another, FBI boss Walter Skinner, played by Mitch Pileggi, is heard saying: 'What can you possibly hope to find, Agent Mulder?'
Then comes the classic line from Mulder: 'The truth is out there'
Flashback: Iconic moments from the long-running show that aired from 1993 to 2002 were also revisited, like this scene where Mulder discovers people infected with the black oil virus
Cabal: The grey men who hid the truth from the world are also seen briefly
Aliens: UFOs played a huge role in the X-Files mythology
The video then cuts to a brief image of Cigarette Smoking Man, played by William B. Davis, who has a tracheotomy hole in his throat.
He's heard mocking Mulder.
'Well, you're wrong. I can't tell you how wrong you've always been,' he says.
In addition to confirming the return of both Davis and Pileggi in the new episodes, the teaser trailer also seems to indicate that another of the show's main antagonists Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea) is back.
The way they were: When 'the truth was out there,' Duchovny and Anderson were relative unknowns. The two stars have since carved out individual careers in movies and on TV
Catching up: Fox is encouraging fans to watch all 201 episodes of the original nine seasons. If fans watch one episode a day starting July 7, they'll finish just in time for the first of the six new episodes on day 202
Filming in the series is currently underway in Vancouver, Canada, where the first five seasons were shot before production was moved to Los Angeles at Duchovny's request.
Chris Carter, who devised the original X-Files, talked about the context for the revival to EW.com last month.
'The series ended right after 9/11. A lot has happened since then. A lot of rollback of rights and liberties in the name of our protection,' carter said.
'We’re being spied on now, we’re being lied to — all things that, for me, remind me of when I grew up, which was right around Watergate. I think we’re in similar and much more dire times right now.'
