Han Solo gets his own film! Disney announces spinoff movie for beloved Star Wars rebel hero set to debut in 2018 

It's a great year to be a Star Wars fan.

On Tuesday Disney announced another Star Wars film, this one in addition to Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens as well as Rogue One.

Deadline reported that the upcoming movie will focus on beloved smuggler-turned-rebel hero Han Solo, originally portrayed by Harrison Ford. The film will center around Solo on his days before he joined up with the rebel alliance, and already has a release date: May 25, 2018.

Disney also announced that the latest film for the Star Wars franchise will be directed by the duo behind 2014 hit The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

The script will be penned by Lawrence Kasdan, who also wrote for Star Wars films Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983).

Lawrence, who will be joined on the project by his son Jon Kasdan, is also working on the upcoming The Force Awakens.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy will be producing, with Lawrence and Jason McGatlin exec producing.

Phil and Christopher also shared their excitement over the project on Tuesday, saying: 'This is the first film we've worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with.'

'We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us.'

They added: 'This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you've loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.'

Christopher then took to Twitter to share the good news, writing: 'Very excited. Celebrating by drinking fancy whiskey out of this cup,' alongside a close-up shot of a red solo cup, with emphasis on 'Solo' in homage of the beloved character. 

His directing partner Phil also took to Twitter on Tuesday, joking: 'Just got back from Alaska anything goin on?' 

The upcoming Han Solo anthology film is set to hit theaters May 25, 2018 - following the Felicity Jones-starring Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, due December 2016, and the highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, due December 2015.
