Tennis: U.S. Open

All talk in the buildup to the tournament at Flushing Meadows has been of the rise of young bloods such as Aussie Lleyton Hewitt and American Andy Roddick.

Experts predict a new era in men's tennis; but, in his usual quiet, undemonstrative way, Pete Sampras (pictured) has been telling friends he badly wants one more U.S. title after his defeat to Marat Safin in last year's final.

By today's third round we should know whether his fabled determination is strong once again.
