Newly appointed Mumbai City player-manager Nicolas Anelka was in attendance at Wimbledon on Monday as the former France international makes the most of his time off before taking over at the Indian Super League outfit.

Anelka looked on keenly as he alternated between Courts 8 and 9 on day seven of the tournament at SW19, telling Sportsmail he was here to watch a friend, before declining to pinpoint exactly who.

The controversial ex-Premier League star officially starts work at the ISL outfit next month, after being persuaded by the club's co-owner and Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor to take the reins.

'I wanted to give it a go,' Anelka said, but rowed back from the suggestion this would lead to management in Europe.

The 36-year-old, who played for Mumbai City last season after being sacked by West Brom for his Quenelle salute, predicts big-name players will be persuaded to join the emerging league.

Anelka will be hoping to lead his side to a much improved position in the league next season, after they finished second from bottom in the first-ever ISL campaign last term.

Mumbai City kick-start their ISL 2015 campaign at home to FC Pune City on October 5.
