William and Kate stood and clapped in delight as they watched Murray knock out Pospisil in his ongoing quest for a second Wimbledon title.

Earlier they had been warmly welcomed into the Royal Box on Centre Court by waiting tennis fans, who were forced to take shelter on two occasions as rain showers suspended play at SW19.

However, once play resumed, Murray, 28, held off pressure from his opponent to win his 150th Grand Slam match win - paving the way for a mouth-watering tie against Roger Federer in the semi-finals on Friday.

Speaking after the match, Murray said he was delighted with the support from the star-studded crowd, saying he ‘loves’ it when the royals come along to watch and describing Beckham as an ‘icon’.

He told BBC One: ‘I have loved playing here over the years, I have played some of my best tennis here and I hope I can get to another final but it’s going to be a tough one.
